Beginner Questions
I've never done yoga before. Which class should I go to?

A beginner class is appropriate for you. Check the class schedule for classes like Beginner I, Gentle and Restorative. If you are out-of-shape, very stiff, or injured, you should start out with a Gentle or Restorative class. On the other hand, if you’re very fit and flexible, you may enjoy starting out at a Beginner I or II class. A Multi-level or gentle Vinyasana class may be okay too; you should call to discuss this with a teacher first.
Do I need a yoga mat?

First-time students may borrow a mat for free at their first class. After the first class, students are required to bring their own mat to class. If you don’t have your own, you can rent one of ours for $1 per usage. We also plan to sell high-quality yoga mats in the near future.
How many times per week should I take class?

We recommend taking a minimum of three classes a week. The variety and flexibility of our schedule allows you to take the same classes, or vary them if you wish.
What should I wear?

No special clothing is required to do yoga. Just wear comfortable clothing that isn’t too baggy yet doesn’t restrict movement. It’s important to be able to see knee alignment, so pants should fit fairly closely. In general, a T-shirt or tank-top and sweats, stretch-pants, or shorts would be appropriate. Yoga is practiced with bare feet, so please come with clean feet, and plan to remove your shoes and socks when you arrive.
Should I take all my classes with the same teacher?

This is entirely your choice. Some students like to take all their classes with the same teacher, while others enjoy practicing with a variety of teachers. In fact, we encourage you to try all of the teachers, as each has his/her own gifts. However, as your practice develops you may wish to seek out a more intensive experience through workshops or private classes.
Should I eat before my class?

We encourage students to avoid eating for two hours before class. If you haven’t eaten since lunchtime and you are coming directly to a class, you might have an apple or a small granola bar, but for your own comfort, an empty stomach is preferable.
How big are your classes?

Class sizes can vary greatly, from five to 30 students. Certain class times are very popular, and when a class is full you may have little space between your mat and your neighbour’s mat. While some students enjoy being in large classes, if you wish to seek out smaller classes, our Tuesday 9:30 a.m. and Friday 9:30 a.m. classes are the best choice. Evening and weekend classes generally attract greater numbers. All classes tend to be larger in September and January.
Do I need to sign-up before I come to class?

No, you can just show up to the class you want to attend. Please plan to arrive 10-15 minutes early to fill out a registration form, if you are a new student.
Does your class schedule change every month?

No, our schedule is fixed at the beginning of each session. However, in the summer, we may adjust the number of classes as we generally experience fewer attendees in warmer weather. Occasionally, if a class is under-attended, we may drop it. Our website schedule is always up-to-date, and you can find it on our website
General Questions
How do I wash my yoga mat?
You need to keep your mat clean, and you should also wash a new mat before its first use to remove any existing oils or grease. The frequency will depend on two main factors—how clean your hands and feet are when you use the mat and how often you use it. If your mat looks dirty or has an odour, you need to wash it. The recommended cleaning process is to wash the mat in your bathtub with warm water and a bit of gentle soap to remove body oils. Using a small, gentle scrub brush, scrub on each side. Drain the tub, rinse the mat, and roll it up in a big towel to remove excess water. Then hang the mat to dry. Depending on the thickness of the mat, it may require up to a day to dry.
Can I do yoga while pregnant?
Yoga can be great for pregnancy. The teachers in our studio are trained in modifying poses for pregnant students. It’s important that you let them know in every class that you are pregnant and the teacher will decide if the class you’re attending is suitable for you. Different periods in a pregnancy will also allow for different postures and types of yoga practice. You are encouraged to phone the studio and get advice from a teacher before deciding which class to attend.
Can I do yoga with an existing injury or other health concern?
Yes, but you need to first talk to the teacher, who can assist you in the classes with modifications to ensure injuries or other health issues are not aggravated. With any acute injury or chronic health issue, it’s best to get approval from your doctor before starting any exercise program.
Is there a way for students to give feedback to the studio?
Yes, feedback is encouraged and is always kept confidential. Email it to us at info[at]yogamatstudio.com
